Quick Answer

What You Need to Know

Almaty is where I'd start

Why Almaty works so well for a first trip

Mountains and nature are right next to the city.

There's good food, plenty of city experiences, easy day trips and cultural activities — all within reach without a lot of travel time.

Other places to consider

These are starting points, not a complete list — Kazakhstan has far more than fits in one guide.

Astana

Modern architecture, capital-city attractions and a very different urban experience from Almaty.

Turkistan

Historical and spiritual heritage, with the Silk Road as part of the story.

Shymkent & southern Kazakhstan

Regional culture, food and a base for reaching southern destinations.

Mangystau

Dramatic desert and geological landscapes — some places look like another planet.

East Kazakhstan

Altai landscapes, mountains and nature.

Zhetysu

Lakes, landscapes and regional cultural experiences. (No dedicated guide page yet.)

Don't underestimate the distances

Kazakhstan is geographically enormous. Places that look close on a map can mean a long flight, a long train ride or a long drive, so choose fewer places and give each one proper time.

Practical Tips

Frequently Asked Questions

It depends on what you want from the trip.

For mountains, food and easy day trips, I'd start with Almaty.

For architecture, museums and modern Kazakhstan, Astana.

For those huge desert landscapes you've probably seen online, Mangystau.

For history, food and southern Kazakhstan, Turkistan and Shymkent.

And if you have more time and want quieter nature, look at East Kazakhstan and the Altai.

You don't need to fit everything into one trip.

It may be possible, depending on your time, your route and the entry requirements for your passport.

Check the official entry requirements for each country before booking anything, and allow realistic travel time — the distances are big.

For one city plus a couple of nearby trips, I'd give yourself around 4–5 days.

For two different regions, 7–10 days feels much better.

If you want a bigger Kazakhstan route, around two weeks gives you time to actually enjoy it instead of spending the whole trip moving.

Kazakhstan is much bigger than people expect when they first start planning.
