Before You Go
Best Time to Visit Kazakhstan
There isn't one best month for the whole country — here's how I'd choose the season based on what you want from your trip.

Quick Answer
- Spring: I especially love March, for Nauryz — the spring New Year celebration.
- Summer: mountains, hiking and alpine lakes — but some lower areas get extremely hot.
- Autumn: colourful landscapes, harvest season and apples.
- Winter: skiing and snow around Almaty and in suitable eastern regions.
What You Need to Know
The short answer
There isn't one best month for the whole country. Kazakhstan is huge, so I'd choose the season based on what you want to do and where you want to go.
Spring — Nauryz, flowers and fresh air
Nauryz is the spring New Year, celebrated around the spring equinox. It is a public holiday in Kazakhstan, observed on 21–23 March.
During Nauryz, visitors may come across public celebrations with yurts, traditional clothing, music, food, performances and cultural activities. What's on depends on the city and the year.
Spring can also be a beautiful time for wildflowers, including tulips and poppies in suitable regions. When and where they bloom depends on the location and the weather, so I wouldn't plan a whole trip around one exact week.
My March: Nauryz
Summer — mountains and the outdoors
Summer is the season I'd recommend for mountains, hiking, nature, alpine lakes and outdoor adventures.
Some lower-altitude areas can get extremely hot, so plan around the temperatures of the region and how high you'll be. A hot city day and a cool mountain evening can be very different weather.
Autumn — colour and apples
Autumn brings colourful landscapes, harvest season and apples, and it's a lovely time for exploring.
Why I love autumn
Winter — snow and skiing
Winter is the time for skiing and snow experiences around Almaty and in suitable eastern regions.
Dinara Nomad can receive enquiries about amateur skiing and group winter programmes. Whether something can be arranged depends on confirmed partners and availability, and nothing is booked automatically. Tell me what you have in mind →

Turkistan & Shymkent: spring and autumn are especially comfortable.
East Kazakhstan: summer to early autumn.
